Pr. Katie Hines-Shah believes in growing in grace. She finds that God often reaches out to us when things are at their worst
and miraculously finds a way to bring new life and light to our lives. Becoming pastor at Shepherd of the Hills two and a half
years ago is part of that story for Pr. Katie.
As an undergraduate at Carleton College, Pr. Katie majored in Classical Languages.
She dates her call to a research project that led her to feminist theology. In Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza’s In Memory of Her, Pr. Katie saw a quote from Sarah Moore Grimke,
an American Suffragette.
“I am inclined to believe that when women are admitted to seminary and allowed
to learn Greek and Hebrew that they will have something new to say.”
It had never occurred to Pr. Katie, who was born and raised a Lutheran, that there
would be something new to say about a book as old as the Bible. But she discovered
that this is precisely why this book has lived and inspired for thousands of years.

So
week in and week out, the Holy Spirit works wonders, and Pr. Katie still finds new
things to say about the convergence of culture and theology. Preaching and moving
people to action are among Pr. Katie’s great passions.
Another passion for Pr. Katie is parenthood. She has a three-year old son. Pr. Katie
and her husband Jay met in Chicago while Pr. Katie was completing her Masters of
Divinity at the University of Chicago. They live just a mile from the church.
